Thank God Blackbox Republic isn’t a dating site
But since it’s an online community for sex-positive people to share their private social life, we know that people will naturally connect and dates will happen, too. So, we decided to learn more about the long-standing industry by attending the iDate Conference. It’s billed as the dating industry’s biggest event. That said, it was clear from attending the small conference that the online dating category was well past the growth and innovation stage, past the optimize and manage phase, and it’s now painted into a dark corner (and not the sort of corner you’d meet a hottie in).
Online dating sites are dead
A profile or a basket of friends won’t get you there. Check out this chart from Google Trends. It compares Online Dating with Social Networking. We also included a look at the trend for sex-positive culture as a point of comparison. As you can see, Online Dating has jumped the shark. It’s massive decline was echoed by even the leadership at the iDate Conference who complained that their industry was “stagnant.” In the meantime (and no surpirse) Social Networking has been steadily growing. Interestingly, so has the trend for the sex-positive culture.
What do you think is needed?
Do you think dating and private social life will just happen on Facebook or do you think the industry needs something new and different? I’d love to know what you think.
