Founding Members in NYC, Portland & SF

3 Cities, 2 Coasts, 3 Days

For those following, Sam and I are on a 50 city tour for Blackbox Republic. We meet with a range of people across lots of different sex-positive communities. From techies, to activists, to impassioned and curious, we learn everything we can.  Recently we hit three cities on two coasts in three days.

1. New York City

If you can believe it, our first night in NYC we went to 12 different LGBT bars to meet with the folks who run them. It was a machine-gun flurry of visits across an amazing range of social circles (and a lot of fun). We also had the opportunity to have a Founding Members meet up at Therapy, a hip spot which united a really diverse crowd. While we captured just a few folks on camera, it was more the personal conversations I loved. Like how some of them said that just telling their friends about Blackbox Republic has greatly evolved the sorts of conversations they’ve now having with them.

During the day, we also met with met with our agency, WeMultiply, who are helping us with our new website so that we can stay busy building out the application for our community.

2. Portland

Straight off the plane from NYC and with 3 hours of sleep, we headed to Portland’s ErosFestival held at the Hotel Jupiter.  ErosFest is a new annual festival and provided a wide range of options for a big crowd. They had everything from fire spinners, to art shows, music and lots of creative vendors.  It was good to see a big event chock-filled with sex-positive people celebrating art and community.  Hats off to Gabrielle for pulling it all together and making it such a success.

3. San Francisco

Have I mentioned we don’t sleep too much? :) After a quick 3 hr nap it was down to San Francisco. First we had  a radio interview on “Sexploration with Monika” (she’s also a Founding Member). Then it was off to meet with more Founding Members at the Hotel Vitale.  It was a diverse turn out from marketers, activists, techies, a CEO, and even a Burning Man staffer. Unfortunately, we were too exhausted to take any pictures or video.

I hope these little glimpses into our grassroots tour help paint a picture of what we’re up to. If you’d like to meet with us sometime,  just drop us a line and we’d love to meet you in person. Phew! Now for some sleep. Yeah, right.

Creeps who game free social networks for dates

This video made me wretch

Recently Sam Lawrence, the CEO of Blackbox Republic, put a blog post out of 10 Things Not In Blackbox Republic. His post reminded me of the sorts of horrible things people do on public sites like Myspace and Facebook.

Soon after, I was sent this video and watched in total disgust and dismay. At first I thought it was a joke and did a fair bit of laughing.  I quickly came to the realization that this guy is serious. It’s hard to believe that there are people who look to this video as a guide for scoring dates.

You can bet we’ve built a ton into Blackbox Republic to keep this sort of thing from happening.

We’re out of the Box!

It’s true, we’re out of stealth mode and officially out of the box!

For those of you who have been reading, you may have wondered a little more about what was going on behind the scenes. Some of you may have thought I was a one-girl band running from city-to-city as part of our 50 city, face-to-face grassroots effort. And while I’ve used this blog to share some of the output of that grass-roots effort, it hasn’t just been me.  Much  more has been going on.

As I write this, the news is just hitting the wire but here are some of the articles I’ve found. I’ll add more as they are posted.

Here’s what I’ve found so far:

Let’s talk about sex…and startups

Blackbox Republic is creating a social network around sex (positivity)

Blackbox Republic, Led by Ex-Jive Exec, Gets Seed Funding for Sex-Positive Social Network

Venture Chronicles

Blackbox Republic Reinvents Social Networking, Online Dating and eCommerce, Sets to Launch New Destination for the Sex-Positive Movement (our release)

We’re in alpha and breathing down the neck of Beta.

Some folks have asked us about the timing of all of this. Right now we’re focused on our Founding Members. If you think you’d like to be one, we’d love it. All you have to do is go to  www.blackboxrepublic.com/founders and sign up.  We’re looking for right-brained, sex-positive, cool people who want to be part of the community.  If this is you, welcome home!

Once our Founding Members have advised us and helped populate things, we’ll be reaching out to a little wider group. Expect invitations to be available near the end of the summer.

Blackbox Republic is made up of 15 rockstar people.

I couldn’t be happier with the amazing team we have in place. If you haven’t checked out our new home page, please do. And be sure to check out the folks at the bottom. They are amazing people. We all fill in where needed, as with any startup, but my main role is VP of Community Relations.  That means, I’m 100% focused on our community, helping to build, add value, listen, be accessible, and do whatever is needed for our members. The other founder is Sam Lawrence who also wears many hats in addition to being CEO (yes, he’s even been the person behind the camera for all my blog posts!).  Sam comes from the social software world where he was most recently CMO at Jive SoftwareTonight he put up a great post about some of the Blackbox Republic back-story. Be sure to check it out.

This is an exciting and scary road we’re on.  We want your continued feedback and input.  As your community advocate, I’ll always be here to help with introductions and questions along the way.  Now that we’re out of the box, I can’t wait for the next phase where I can invite you in.

What is sex-positive?

Given that “sex-positive” is a newer term, we often get asked what it means.

Some people assume it has something to do with porn, adult content, AIDS, or just the act of sex itself. At Blackbox
